Then if the part requirement calls out for SCOTCHBRITE to clean\u2026you find an un-joined error because SC0TCHBRITE \u2260 SCOTCHBRITE.<\/p><p>Similarly, maybe your tech pubs team uses the (m) \u2014 dash instead of the (n) \u2013 dash. 32\u201411\u201401\u2014400\u2014801 \u2260 32\u201311\u201301\u2013400\u2013801.<\/p><p>Now imagine that once you find this\u2026you suddenly start to question everything you see\u2026did you notice the trailing space in the heading\u2026that is a character that represents data. Are your current fields character limited, and departments have come up with a unique way of concatenating the data to fit, or trim leading or trailing data?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Is the system you are migrating to able to represent the same data lengths and types? Well, according to the data we encounter, your answer should be: Yes!! Data becomes contextual at some point. The data migration strategy and tools need to be adaptable so they can handle: \u2018this data means what it says UNLESS this other factor is present, and then it means something else entirely\u2019, or: \u2018if it\u2019s before this date, it could mean this, or if it\u2019s after it could mean that\u2026unless it was during the time of \u2018he-who-shall-not-be-named\u2019, and then it\u2019s just a crap-shoot\u2026\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Many times, in the data world this situation emerges when there is little-to-no documentation from primary data source systems on changes\/enhancements\/modifications made to the system over time.
