Introducing a New Technology Offering For Aircraft Asset Management

Tsunami Tsolutions has introduced a new WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit for aircraft operators, both commercial and defense.

The WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit connects disconnected data silos and replaces extensive manual efforts to reconcile allowable configuration data as OEM and operator source documents are revised, with an automated, auditable and streamlined package of software and professional services from Tsunami Tsolutions.  The toolkit efficiently extends aircraft records data in the operator’s existing maintenance and engineering (M&E) system with cleaned and harmonized data extracted from portable document format files and other unstructured data provided by OEMs and operators.

Introducing a New Technology Offering For Aircraft Asset Management

The solution addresses the widely encountered problems aircraft fleet managers face in documenting the airworthiness of aircraft by confirming each part is approved in the allowable configuration for use on that model and individual airframe. The process draws on as-maintained configuration data already inside the  fleet M&E system on how each specific tail has changed over time as new parts are installed during regular maintenance, overhaul or refit. Any configuration changes will need to be reconciled against the approved, allowable configuration, which depends on data released periodically from the operator and the aircraft manufacturer. Data in an operator’s asset management and aircraft maintenance software is contained in a database in a structured way, but data from aircraft OEMs come as varying and unstructured formats, usually in PDF.

What results from this need to manage extensive sets of structured and unstructured data under constant revision is a loose system of databases, spreadsheets and manual processes that is time-consuming and expensive for operators to maintain.  The toolkit fixes the disconnect between PDF document centric information meant to be consumed by people and structured data that can be consumed by software. This allows users to quickly assess an approved aircraft configuration using visual cues for a specific tail number in an easy to filter/search interface.

WAVES Configuration Support

“The WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit is in keeping with our approach of packaging domain-specific expertise with enterprise technology,” Tsunami Tsolutions CEO Mark Buongiorno said. “Our goal is to supplement our client’s internal capabilities in a thoughtful way to solve a real need and provide exceptional value.”

Software to Ensure Allowable Configuration

The market got its first exposure to the new solution’s initial use case in September at the Airline & Aerospace MRO & Flight Operations IT Conference in Miami.

“Aircraft maintenance software will sometimes have good configuration management capabilities, but it is only as good as airline’s processes and how well they can identify and keep track of the changing data sources from OEMs like the Illustrated Part Catalog (IPC) or their own changes, such as Engineering Orders (EOs).  These are just two examples of where this source data may originate from.  Once changes are identified, the operator’s Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) system must be updated to correctly reflect the updates,” Tsunami Tsolutions Associate Director of Maintenance Engineering/Commercial Portfolio Management Peter White said. “With this toolkit, mechanics are always seeing the latest approved configuration options and are confident each part is allowable. This reduces cost and effort caused by to non-conforming parts and most certainly eliminates the compliance risk.”

Apart from using Tsunami’s WAVES (Wash, Analyze, Verify, Enhance, Store) Data Management Toolset  to harmonize the different data sources an airline needs to ensure an allowable configuration, the WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit provides intuitive analytics to help airline maintenance and engineering teams gain confidence in the current configuration of a craft or entire fleet and ease the effort of maintaining the configuration in the M&E software system by visual identification of data differences.

The toolkit is delivered through an initial consulting engagement to configure the solution around an airline’s internal and external data sources. Tsunami Tsolutions’ WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit is delivered through software-as-a-service (SaaS). A runtime version of Salesforce Tableau surfaces actionable insights so teams can quickly identify and address configuration issues. The toolkit also supports Microsoft Power BI.

With the WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit from Tsunami Tsolutions, the operator retains custody and ownership of their data. The solution eliminates manual processes and the time they consume, eliminating inconsistencies. These manual processes are replaced with a regimented approach to dividing the fleet into multiple Air Transport Association (ATA) classifications with auditable processes for each to yield clean, structured and reliable data. The solution can support multiple concurrent users, with all review and correction statuses tracked in an auditable fashion.

Customer-Driven

Like many of Tsunami Tsolutions’ offerings, the WAVES Configuration Support Toolkit arose from customer needs and use cases. The solution is available as a standardized offering with a predictable budget and timeline, and will continue to evolve to meet additional customer needs. With a standardized structured data set, this construct will enable additional visualizations and functionality customized to the operator’s processes and business value proposition.
