Case Study: ST Engineering 2024

About The Customer

ST Engineering Aerospace Systems (STEAS), a subsidiary of ST Engineering’s Commercial Aero-space business, provides component repair and overhaul of Airbus, Boeing and ATR aircraft and helicopter components, landing gears and aero-structures. The company is approved by 18 Air-worthiness Authorities and is the authorised ser-vice centers for more than 20 OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

STEAS also provides component pooling and Main Base Kit support, comprehensive compo-nent Maintenance-By-the-Hour services (MBHTM), 24/7 component availability support, warehouse management, components health management and reliability analysis, as well as aircraft parts dis-tributorship and rotables trading services.

Project Overview

STEAS first implemented IFS Applications 9 (Apps 9) to support its MBHTM business. The scope of the implementation included the IFS component repair, warehouse and inventory management, project management and quality management solutions, in addition to several modifications and configurations to the standard functionalities.

With the continued evolution of the IFS functionality, and the availability of IFS Cloud, STEAS made the decision in 2023 to upgrade the application to IFS Cloud and take advantage of new application capabilities relevant to its business.

Tsunami Tsolutions was selected as the imple-mentation partner to support STEAS on this jour-ney, a decision largely attributed to its deep in-dustry and IFS knowledge, along with its flexibility to collaborate with STEAS team, to achieve the desired project outcomes within the aggressive project schedule.

“Tsunami Tsolutions has worked tire-lessly in the environmental (PROD, DEV, UAT) setups to ensure their work com-plies with STEAS’ strict security policies. They have showcased an ability to work well under time pressure with a stellar understanding of project priorities and allocation of resources, specifically dur-ing the SAT (System Acceptance Test) where issues discovered require prompt rectification.”

Increase Efficiency Not Headcount

Coming out of the COVID, the aerospace industry has seen a rapid return to pre-COVID levels of fly-ing. The return of travel demand was accompa-nied by a surge in aircraft maintenance work, trig-gered by a need to return aircraft to service quick-ly and commence business-as-usual maintenance regimes.

This higher-than-normal level of maintenance ac-tivity has been made more difficult due to labour shortage and supply chain challenges, resulting in long lead times.

All these factors led to a clear requirement for STEAS to streamline its operations to the greatest extent possible to optimise their processes and inventory levels across the component support network. By doing so, STEAS could support an increased level of customer demands without a corresponding increase in headcount.

In addition, through the adoption of new IFS Cloud functionality, specifically designed to meet the customers’ needs, STEAS successfully reduced the number of modifications and configurations required of the application by 75%, paving the way for an ‘evergreen’ upgrade path going for-ward.

Project Team Analysis & Advice

STEAS re-implemented the IFS Cloud application in seven months as planned. All the process im-provements targeted during the initial require-ments analysis were achieved, with continued im-provements since the application went live.

The STEAS project team was specifically recog-nised for their dedication and deep knowledge of the business processes. Their commitment, com-bined with the industry background of Tsunami Tsolutions’ consultants, led to good collaboration and fast decision-making, which ensured STEAS’ business objectives were achieved with minimal changes made to the standard IFS Implementation.

The project also enabled the STEAS IT support team to further enhance reporting, manage the migration of additional data and implement small process changes independently after the project was concluded.

Project Benefits

STEAS has achieved several significant benefits from the upgrade to IFS Cloud partnered with Tsunami Tsolutions. These include:

  • • Full implementation and visibility of contract requirements and contract compliance from IFS Cloud.

    • Real-time reporting and visibility of inventory levels at MBK (Main Base Kit) and rotable pool sites.

    • Standardization of all outgoing logistics pro-cesses with all required documentation being produced directly from IFS Cloud.

    • Implementation of functionality to support ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and export control requirements directly in IFS Cloud.

    • Improved management reporting using IFS Lobbies showing key performance indicators for each department.

The Future — Evergreen Upgrades

STEAS has transitioned smoothly into an opera-tional phase following the “Go live” for the project and is much better positioned to support minor changes and manage day-to-day support going forward.

Tsunami Tsolutions continues to support STEAS under an Application Maintenance and Support contract, covering the provision of strategic advice and guidance on new changes that are being re-leased by IFS and how these should fit into the solution roadmap for STEAS.

With the movement to IFS Cloud, STEAS is now ready to embrace an evergreen upgrade strategy with the next likely upgrade to IFS Cloud 24R2 being released in November 2024.
